You can download the Snapshot app with Road Test free of charge from the Google Play or Apple® App Store. Once installed, open the app and follow the instructions to complete your registration in the program.

Which mobile phones are supported?

Progressive's Snapshot app with Road Test is compatible with most Android and iPhone smartphones.

Why can't I see the Snapshot app with Road Test in the App Store?

If you cannot see the app in the App Store, it's because your phone is not supported and not available for participation in Snapshot Road Test.

Why is the Snapshot app with Road Test not available for me?

Snapshot Road Test is not available in all states.

Do I need to leave the app running in the background?

Your phone automatically collects your driving data even when the app is closed. Simply make sure the app is installed (and unpaused) and your phone is on during trips.

Which settings are required to use the app on my phone?

iOS/iPhones

You'll need to apply the following settings and permissions for the app to function properly:

  • Background App Refresh: This setting allows the app to record your driving data while running in the background. For best results, this setting must always be enabled for the Snapshot app with Road Test. You can enable this setting in the Settings app under General>Background App Refresh.
  • Location Services: These services are needed to detect driving behaviors such as hard braking, mileage, and may be used for underwriting purposes. For the app to work properly, Location Services must be enabled at all times. This setting can be found in the Settings app under Privacy>Location Services.
  • Wi-Fi: The app uses Wi-Fi to send us your trip information. The app also uses Wi-Fi to more accurately determine when a trip begins and to complement the GPS location data.
  • App Running: The app needs to stay on in order to properly record safe driving, so please don't delete or close the app. It's okay for the app to be running in the background.

Android

The app is compatible with most Android smartphones. Upon installation, the app requests access to the following:

  • Location: Location services are used to calculate driving behaviors such as hard braking, mileage, and may be used for underwriting purposes. On newer versions of Android, in Settings>Location>Mode needs to be set to "High Accuracy" or the app can't use GPS (just cellular). On older Android versions, Settings>Location needs to have all Locations Service source options enabled. Examples include GPS satellites, Location Services, and Google Location Services (or Google Wi-Fi Location Information).
  • Wi-Fi: The app uses Wi-Fi to send us your trip information. The app also uses Wi-Fi to more accurately determine when a trip begins and to complement GPS location data.
  • Modify or delete the contents of your SD card: This setting is required for Google Maps to cache map data, which is used to display your trips in the app. We don't modify or delete any of your existing SD card content.
  • Read phone status and identity: Required to detect distraction-free driving.
  • App Running: To avoid missing trips, please keep the app running in the background. Deleting or closing the app may prevent it from recording your driving data.

Why does the app need a Wi-Fi connection?

Your trip information is sent to us over Wi-Fi. Your Wi-Fi connection also helps the app determine when a trip starts and complements GPS location data.

What data does the app collect?

The Snapshot app with Road Test collects information about how you drive, how much you drive, when you drive, and how you use your phone while behind the wheel. While location data is collected as well, it doesn't impact the Snapshot results you earn, but may be used for underwriting purposes. We're committed to keeping your driving information secure.

For details, see the Snapshot Privacy Statement.

Does the Snapshot app with Road Test know who I'm calling or texting?

No. The app cannot see who you're contacting or any of your communications. In addition, the app only collects data on phone usage while you're driving.

What types of phone use does the Snapshot app with Road Test measure?

Phone use behind the wheel is one of the most common (and dangerous) types of distracted driving, and we take that into account with Snapshot Road Test. We measure any handheld phone activity in the app, such as texting or any other activity where you're actively touching your phone. So hands-free phone calls or apps (like music streaming or GPS directions) are fine, but, depending on your state, physically interacting with your phone during a trip (e.g., picking up your phone to glance at the map) could hurt your results.

To be safe, we recommend opening any apps, such as typing in an address or choosing a music playlist, before you start driving. And remember, Progressive can't see what you're looking at on your phone.

How does the Snapshot app with Road Test know if I am driving?

The app can tell when you're driving based on your speed and the distance you're traveling. It can also tell when you're the driver rather than a passenger. It's entirely automatic, so you can hop in your car without a second thought.

Do I have to turn on the app every time I get in my car?

No. All you need to do is keep your phone on while driving. The app detects when your trip begins and automatically starts gathering data.

Does the app use GPS data?

The app uses GPS to determine your mileage, driving behaviors, and speed over time. Location data sourced from GPS is also used to provide trip information, but is not used in generating your personalized rate. However, it may be used for underwriting purposes.

Does the Snapshot app with Road Test prevent me from using my phone while driving?

No. The mobile app does not restrict the use of your phone in any way, regardless of whether you're driving or not.

Do I need to leave the app on my phone for a certain number of days?

The app must collect 30 days of driving data before you remove it from your phone. We let you know when you complete the monitoring requirement, at which point the app no longer collects driving information.

What happens if I delete the app?

Removing the app from your phone won't automatically end your participation in the Snapshot Road Test program. However, we need regular updates from your phone in order for you to continue the trial.

If we don't hear from your phone often enough, we may send you an email with instructions to reinstall the app to continue participation in Snapshot Road Test.

How much data/battery does the app use?

The app uses very little data and battery power. Battery use increases while driving, but this is comparable to other driving and navigation apps. For long road trips, we recommend charging the phone while driving.

What if my trip type isn't categorized correctly?

If you ever find a miscategorized trip, you can correct it within the app.

Why don't all of my trips appear?

The app may not collect every trip you take, or it may only capture part of a trip — this is normal. In most cases, missing or partial trips are caused by a weak signal or low battery. However, if you notice that the majority of your trips are missing or only include partial data, please call us at 1-877-329-7283 for help.

Can I continue to use the app after I'm finished with the program?

No. Once we notify you that you completed monitoring, the app ceases collecting trips and your past data is no longer available on the phone.

Is all of the information shown on the phone used to determine my rate?

No, we show quite a bit of information on the phone in order to make the experience more robust. For specifics on what information is used to determine your personalized rate, please visit the state details page.

What if I get a new phone number or a new phone?

No problem — as long as you switched to an Android or iPhone®, we can transfer Snapshot Road Test to your new device. If the app doesn't automatically transfer to your new phone, just go to your app store and redownload the Snapshot app with Road Test. From there, open the app and follow the instructions.

If you have any issues, please give us a call at 1-877-329-7283 so we can help.

Note: This FAQ offers a broad overview of the Snapshot Road Test program and how it works. The program does vary and is not available in all states. See the Snapshot Road Test Terms and Conditions for more information.
