Winter in Maine can bring impossibly short days that feel devoid of sunlight, massive piles of snow and temperatures so cold they are prefaced with a negative. While winter in the Pine Tree State is no joke, it doesn't have to break you as long as you are prepared.
Average annual snowfall in Maine is 50 to 70 inches along the coast and 60-110 inches inland. The coast rarely has more than 15 to 20 days annually with snowfall of one inch or more, although a "Northeaster" may occasionally drop 10 or more inches of snow in a single day.
Staying in Maine during the winter months has more than just beautiful scenery as a benefit. Accommodation rates are often lower and there may even be off-season specials in coastal areas. You have your choice of the best luxury winter resorts or cozy winter cabins in Maine.
Over the years, a white Thanksgiving has been observed 15 percent of the time. The snowiest Thanksgiving was in 1987 when 11.8 inches of snow was observed. At Caribou, the warmest Thanksgiving was in 1953 when the high temperature was 61 degrees. The lowest temperature observed was 1 above in 1951.

When to Visit. Color progresses from north to south. Generally northern Maine is at or near peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October. Central, and western mountains of Maine are at or near peak Indigenous Peoples' Day week/weekend.
According to our friends at the National Weather Service, the earliest it has ever snowed in Maine (with some accumulation) is in September. On September 29, 1991, Caribou, Maine, saw some snow. What about in New Hampshire? Concord saw its earliest snow ever in October of 1979.
What is the best time of the year to go to Bar Harbor Maine?
US News Travel claims that September through October is the best time to visit Bar Harbor, and it's no wonder. With the kids back to school and the nights getting chillier, tourism drops by almost half when the fall rolls in.
“I find May, early June, and October are the best times to visit Maine. During these times, the weather remains splendid and the tourists are fewer, allowing travelers to get the full small-town allure that Maine has to offer,” Daniel Braun, manager of The White Barn Inn in Kennebunk, told Travel + Leisure.
Even though the summer months of June, July, and August are by far the busiest time of the year, many would argue that this is still the best time to go to Maine. For those looking for fewer crowds, and nature at its finest, the fall shoulder season from September to October may be the best time to visit.
Maine is known for many things, from its startlingly beautiful coastlines and national parks to its variety of historic sites. From luxurious mansions to picture-perfect lighthouses, there are all sorts of places to see here that have stories to tell. Many travelers associate dining in Maine exclusively with lobster.

Winter here brings snow-capped mountains, thickly-frozen lakes, and frigid temperatures; summertime offers temperate, humid days and cool, comfortable evenings. Fall and spring fill the gaps with more moderate days and crisp evenings.
The states of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Vermont and Maine spanning all the way west to North Dakota, Montana and Alaska, are some of the locations with the highest probability of at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day, based on historical weather patterns from Noaa.
When you account for the snow that is already on the ground, we do indeed have a white Christmas most of the time. Portland has a 60% chance of a white Christmas. Bangor and Augusta have a great chance to see snow on the ground (and maybe in the sky too!)
Does Maine get tornadoes?
As far as tornadoes in Maine are concerned, they're not all that common. We usually receive about 2 tornadoes per year. We already had one landspout (a weak type of tornado) in Denmark earlier this year with winds around 55 miles per hour.

Located near the Canadian border, Allagash is no stranger to cold weather.

# 1 of states with the least snow – Hawaii
Much like Florida, Hawaii's average yearly snowfall is non-existent. It also boasts highs in the 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Weather like this should certainly make you consider saying “Aloha” to Hawaii in the winter months.
Seasonal snowfall is far less across far southern Connecticut and coastal Rhode Island than it is across interior and Northern coastal areas (only 24 to 30 inches or 0.61 to 0.76 metres of snow annually), and in some years little snow falls.
Maine's Prettiest Winter Towns. Maine has so much to offer with each town you visit. Some of our favorite towns to visit are Kennebunkport, Camden, and Boothbay Harbor. These towns have wonderful festivals and events during the winter months to keep the visitors coming.
Though many New Englanders are used to seeing high amounts of snow, Maine is second in the nation for average snowfall, beating Alaska by more than a foot. Read more.

The town with the most snow is: Valdez, Alaska, with 279.4 inches per year, on average. Another stand-out is Blue Canyon, CA, with a historical average of 241.7 inches per year!
Alta, Utah. Even though this village has a population of fewer than 400 people, it manages to set quite a few records. At an altitude of 8,950 feet, Alta is not only the snowiest town in the United States but also one of the highest. This village — and the nearby Alta Ski Area — receives 583 inches of snow per year.
Five weather stations that recorded snowfall in the United States from 1991 to 2020, report annual totals that average over 300 inches or 25 feet (7.6 metres). At the top of the list for deep snow is Oregon's Crater Lake, which averages 463 inches, or nearly 39 feet of fresh snow a year.
