What is the meaning of stock rating?
A stock rating is a measure of the expected performance of a stock in a given time period. Analysts and brokerage firms often use ratings when issuing stock recommendations to stock traders.
The RS Rating, ranging from 1 (worst) to 99 (best), measures a stock's price performance over the last 12 months. The best stocks tend to have an 80 or better RS Rating as they launch a new climb.
- Buy rating – A recommendation to buy the stock.
- Sell rating – A recommendation to sell or even short the stock.
- Hold rating – A neutral rating means there is no reason to buy the stock. Or, there is no compelling reason to sell it if you already own it.
A 'hold' is generally an experts suggestion or recommendation to not either sell or purchase securities. A firm making a recommendation to hold is usually anticipated to perform with the market or at a similar pace of peer companies. This rating is considered to be better than sell and not better than purchase.
Key Takeaways. An overweight rating on a stock usually means that it deserves a higher weighting than the benchmark's current weighting for that stock. An overweight rating on a stock means that an equity analyst believes the company's stock price should perform better in the future.
A 5-star rating means the stock is undervalued and trading at an attractive discount relative to its fair value estimate. Subscribe to Morningstar Investor to see what companies are trading at a discount.
The star rating is calculated by comparing a stock's current market price with our analyst's estimate of the stock's fair value—the bigger the discount (or premium), the more (or fewer) stars.
How accurate are Wall Street analyst ratings? Some Wall Street analyst ratings are highly accurate, meaning their ratings lead to successful returns for investors. However, in the stock market, nothing is truly guaranteed. This means investors want to interpret analyst ratings with a healthy dose of skepticism.
A 4-star rating means the stock is moderately undervalued and trading at a slight discount relative to its fair value estimate.
AAA-rated corporate bonds
Corporate bonds receive letter grades from independent credit rating agencies; these ratings reflect the financial soundness and credit history of the issuing company. Why they're safe: The AAA rating is the highest grade a company and its debt can receive.
How many years should you hold a stock?
The big money tends to be made in the first year or two. In most cases, profits should be taken when a stock rises 20% to 25% past a proper buy point. Then there are times to hold out longer, like when a stock jumps more than 20% from a breakout point in three weeks or less.
If you have individual stocks that appear to be underperforming (consistently), it may be time to cut your losses before those losses stack up even higher. However, if you believe the market will recover (which it usually does), you may decide to hold onto your stocks and ride out the waves.
You may have to pay capital gains tax on stocks sold for a profit. Any profit you make from selling a stock is taxable at either 0%, 15% or 20% if you held the shares for more than a year. If you held the shares for a year or less, you'll be taxed at your ordinary tax rate.
A 'strong buy' means the analyst believes the stock's underlying company is or will soon be experiencing positive financial performance and/or favorable market conditions. A strong buy rating indicates an analyst has reason to believe the stock will trade drastically higher over the coming months.
Price-earnings ratio (P/E)
A high P/E ratio could mean the stocks are overvalued. Therefore, it could be useful to compare competitor companies' P/E ratios to find out if the stocks you're looking to trade are overvalued. P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the market value per share by the earnings per share (EPS).
To give you some sense of what the average for the market is, though, many value investors would refer to 20 to 25 as the average P/E ratio range.

A 1-star rating means the stock is overvalued and trading at a premium relative a its fair value estimate.
What is a rating vs a share?
While a show's rating is the percentage of all possible TV households or viewers in the country, its share is the percentage of households or viewers actually watching TV at the time. Shares are nearly always reported alongside ratings since not every TV in America is on all the time (it only seems that way).
1 rating A stock rated “1” means we would buy it right here. In other words, we believe the risk/reward is attractive at the current price level and we would look to add to our position when it makes sense with our average cost basis and current size.
'Outperform' is an analyst rating suggesting a stock will do better than the market or sector average, while 'buy' is a more direct recommendation implying the stock is a good investment opportunity.
A bullish stock is a stock that's rising in price. So, if a financial news show reports that most analysts in a survey think we're headed for a “bull market” in stocks, it means that those analysts believe that stocks will begin an extended uptrend, with prices rising consistently for a while.
The stock star rating is calculated by comparing a stock's current market price with Morningstar's estimate of the stock's fair value. 2. The further the market price is below the fair value, the higher the star rating. A 5-star rating means the stock is trading meaningfully below fair value.
