Should I trust stock analysts?
How accurate are Wall Street analyst ratings? Some Wall Street analyst ratings are highly accurate, meaning their ratings lead to successful returns for investors. However, in the stock market, nothing is truly guaranteed. This means investors want to interpret analyst ratings with a healthy dose of skepticism.
Despite the best efforts of analysts, a price target is a guess with the variance in analyst projections linked to their estimates of future performance. Studies have found that, historically, the overall accuracy rate is around 30% for price targets with 12-18 month horizons.
Investors must remember two things. First, most analysts do their best to find good investments, so ratings are, for the most part, useful. Second, legitimate ratings are valuable pieces of information that investors should consider, but they should not be the only tool in the investment decision-making process.
Analysts Aren't Always Right
It's important to note that analysts' forecasts aren't always right, and are very often wrong.
Analyst recommendations typically come in the form of a rating, such as “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.” Each rating reflects the analyst's opinion on the stock's potential performance. A “buy” rating indicates that the analyst believes the stock is undervalued and has the potential to increase in price.

With all due respect Equity Analysts (myself being a former analyst) are more often wrong than right, i.e. less than 50% right in the long run on recommendations. Also to hedge their position analysts sometimes flock together on stock price targets and recommendations, i.e Sell, Neutral or Buy.

Financial analysts and stock market investors alike are subject to behavioral biases. Objective analyst forecasts can potentially help correct investor misperceptions.
Who pays stock analysts?
Independent analysts receive compensation either from the companies they research, which is called fee-based research, or by selling subscription-based reports. This is one of the most significant areas of conflict of interest for analysts.
Dubbed the Magnificent Seven stocks, Apple, Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta Platforms and Tesla lived up to their name in 2023 with big gains. But the first quarter of 2024 has shown a big divergence of returns.

Ten bagger stocks have a 1000% return on investment (ROI). For example, an investor buys a stock for $10, and the value goes up to $100. Fund manager Peter Lynch created the term in his book One Up On Wall Street. Peter Lynch was the manager of the Fidelity Magellan mutual fund in the 1980s and 1990s.
Typically, the average P/E ratio is around 20 to 25. Anything below that would be considered a good price-to-earnings ratio, whereas anything above that would be a worse P/E ratio. But it doesn't stop there, as different industries can have different average P/E ratios.
While there is no guarantee, the changes in ratings on a company may indicate the direction of their buying patterns. If they start "initial coverage," it may mean that they are considering adding the stock to their portfolios or have already started accumulating the stock.
Accurate stock price prediction is extremely challenging because of multiple (macro and micro) factors, such as politics, global economic conditions, unexpected events, a company's financial performance, and so on. But all of this also means that there's a lot of data to find patterns in.
The factors and sources of information to be considered are varied and wide. This makes it very difficult to predict future stock market price behavior. It is evident that stock prices cannot be accurately predicted.
The number of analysts covering a stock can vary widely. While blue chips or other well-known companies may be covered by several analysts, small companies may only be covered by one or two analysts.
What makes a stock a strong buy?
A strong buy is an analyst's recommendation to purchase shares of a company that, based on analysis, is expected to dramatically outperform in the short- to mid-term. A strong buy rating is usually accompanied by an extremely optimistic price target on the stock, such as a 30% to 50% gain over the coming 12 months.
Another study analyzed a dataset consisting of 6,627 forecasts made by 68 forecasters. It found that while some forecasters did “very well,” the “majority perform at levels not significantly different than chance.” Overall, only 48% of forecasts were correct.
The month of September has been, on average, the worst month for the stock market going back more than a century.

The opening period (9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time) is often one of the best hours of the day for day trading, offering the biggest moves in the shortest amount of time. A lot of professional day traders stop trading around 11:30 a.m. because that is when volatility and volume tend to taper off.
