How many people have less than $1,000 in bank account?
Americans are falling short on the savings front
Savings account balance | Percentage of respondents |
---|---|
$0 | 11% |
$1 to $500 | 30% |
$500 to $1,000 | 8% |
$1,001 to $5,000 | 22% |
America's poor savings habits
The result? Nearly seven in 10 Americans (69%) had less than $1,000 in their savings account. Breaking the survey data down a bit further, we find that 34% of Americans don't have a dime in their savings account, while another 35% have less than $1,000.
The median account balance in 2019 was around $5,300, while the average account balance is around $41,600. This is the latest available data, as the Federal Reserve releases this survey every three years. The Fed plans to publish its 2022 survey data later this year.
About 29% of respondents have between $501 and $5,000 in their savings accounts, while the remaining 21% of Americans have $5,001 or more.
44% of Americans can't pay an unexpected $1,000 expense from savings. 'We're just not wired to save,' expert says.
The personal savings rate (personal savings as a percentage of disposable personal income) was 4.1%. Excluding retirement assets, the average American has $65,100 in personal savings, according to a 2023 Financial Planning & Progress study from Northwestern Mutual.
The numbers are consistently around 60%, meaning only 40% of Americans have enough savings to cover an unexpected expense without going into debt. As of January 2023, the report shows that 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.
A new GOBankingRates survey found that most Americans have $1,000 or less in personal savings in 2023; a third have $500 or less saved, while 8.5% have between $501 and $1,000. Meanwhile a whopping 11.4% said they have no savings, the survey found.
The survey revealed that 36% of all Americans have absolutely no savings at all, and another 19% have less than $1,000 saved. Just 45% of all Americans have $1,000 or more in savings. These were the savings account balances as of the third quarter of 2022.
How much does the average 60 year old have in their bank account?
Age Range | Account Balance |
---|---|
Ages 45-54 | $48,200 |
Ages 55-64 | $57,670 |
Ages 65-74 | $60,410 |
Ages 75+ | $55,320 |
70% of Americans are stressed about finances
Only 45% of adults said they have an emergency fund. For those who do have emergency savings, about 26% polled said they have less than $5,000 saved. That survey found that 58% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.
Nearly one in four (22 percent) U.S. adults said they have no emergency savings. Despite economic challenges, the percentage remains relatively unchanged year-over-year. In 2022, 23 percent of Americans had no emergency savings.
Here is the median and average checking account balances in the US, for Americans who have checking accounts: Median: $2,900. Average (Mean): $9,132.
18% said their saving were at least $1000 but under $10,000, while 11% each had $10,000 to $49,999 and $50,000 or more saved up. A substantial share of respondents—17%—preferred not to answer. The survey also found that U.S. women were much less likely to have (substantial) savings.
The average retirement savings for all families is $333,940 according to the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances. Taken on their own, those numbers aren't incredibly helpful. There are a variety of decent retirement savings benchmarks out there, but how much money other people have isn't one of them.
How Much Do Americans Have in Their Savings Accounts? | ||
---|---|---|
$100 or less | 32.90% | 33.93% |
$101-$500 | 12.80% | 10.04% |
$501-$1,000 | 11.30% | 12.58% |
$1,001-$2,000 | 10.60% | 9.81% |
American households, on average, have $41,600 in savings, according to data last collected by the Federal Reserve in 2019. The median balance for American households is $5,300, according to the same data. The reality is that the above stats may not accurately reflect the financial situation of many Americans.
Age of family head (or reference person) | Median net worth | Average net worth |
---|---|---|
Less than 35 | $39,000 | $183,500 |
35-44 | $135,600 | $549,600 |
45-54 | $247,200 | $975,800 |
55-64 | $364,500 | $1,566,900 |
The average American household has $10,618 in their checking account as of the most recent Federal Reserve data. The median balance is much lower, which implies the average is skewed by some high-balance households. How much you need in your checking account depends on your personal situation.
How much money do most people have in their bank account?
How much does the average household have in savings? While the median bank account balance is $5,300, according to the latest SCF data, the average — or mean — balance is actually much higher, at $41,600.
Average Savings by Age 30
According to the latest Survey of Consumer Finances, the average savings in transaction accounts for this group was $11,250, and the median was $3,240, in 2019. If you have more than this in your savings account at 30, you have more than many of your peers.
Despite the significance of having savings, however, research shows that 45% of Americans have less than $1,000 saved — and in an emergency situation, $1,000 may very well not be sufficient.
Saving $1,000 per month can be a good sign, as it means you're setting aside money for emergencies and long-term goals. However, if you're ignoring high-interest debt to meet your savings goals, you might want to switch gears and focus on paying off debt first.
Other answers revealed that 15 percent had between $1,000 to $5,000, 10 percent with savings of $5,000 to $10,000, 13 percent boasted $10,000 to $20,000 of cash in their bank accounts while 20 percent had more than $20,000.
