According to data from the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, the average American family has $62,410 in savings, across savings accounts, checking accounts, money market accounts, call deposit accounts, and prepaid cards.
Most American households have at least $1,000 in checking or savings accounts. But only about 12% have more than $100,000 in checking and savings.
For many people, $10,000 is a solid amount of money to have in their emergency fund. If you're saving for emergencies, you should keep your money in a high-yield savings account to maximize the interest you earn.

By law, individuals, businesses and trades must file Form 8300 to the IRS within 15 days of receiving a cash sum of $10,000 or more. This form is meant to help prevent money laundering. Everyone involved in the transaction will also need to provide a written statement to be filed along with Form 8300.
How much is too much? The general rule is to have three to six months' worth of living expenses (rent, utilities, food, car payments, etc.)
