Does opening a new bank account hurt credit?
Credit unions and banks do not require a hard credit pull to open a new account, and a soft credit pull has no impact on your score. All you need to open a checking or savings account is a photo ID, your Social Security Number, proof of your address, and money for an initial deposit.
Opening a bank account doesn't directly hurt your score; rather, your score is determined by a variety of factors related to your financial responsibility. These include payment history, your credit utilization ratio, credit mix and more.
If possible, you should avoid or minimise these to keep your score as high as possible: Frequently setting up new accounts. Opening a new bank account should only lower your credit score temporarily – but if you do it too often, your score won't have time to recover. Being close to your credit limit.
Banks don't look at your credit score when you open a checking and/or savings account, but they may screen your banking history.
Will opening a new bank account hurt my credit? Opening a new bank account will only hurt your credit score if a hard credit check is done. This is typically the case with current accounts or where an overdraft is involved. Even if this is the case, the slight drop will only be temporary.
When you open a new credit account, it lowers the overall age of your credit. In addition to the age of credit, opening up any new credit account generally requires a hard inquiry, which could ding your credit score a few points temporarily. After about two years, the inquiry should drop off.
Although it's important to limit the number of hard credit checks you have, the credit score impact for most people switching bank accounts will be negligible and short-lived. However, there are some situations where you might want to reconsider whether now is the best time to switch accounts.

What bank account can I open if I have bad credit?

It's possible that you could see your credit scores drop after fulfilling your payment obligations on a loan or credit card debt. Paying off debt might lower your credit scores if removing the debt affects certain factors like your credit mix, the length of your credit history or your credit utilization ratio.
Will having two or more current accounts damage my credit score? Not necessarily, no. However, having two or more current accounts won't necessarily damage your credit score, but it could have a negative impact if you start dipping into multiple overdrafts – making it look as if your finances are becoming stretched.
Your payment history is one of the most important credit scoring factors and can have the biggest impact on your scores. Having a long history of on-time payments is best for your credit scores, while missing a payment could hurt them. The effects of missing payments can also increase the longer a bill goes unpaid.
Many consumers assume they only need one savings account to meet their needs, but that isn't always the case. Having multiple accounts — at the same bank or different banks — can be useful for managing different savings goals, and there's little harm in doing so, since it doesn't impact your credit.
- Request your report.
- Dispute errors.
- Pay off debts.
- Ask creditors to update information.
- Wait until the record drops out of the database.
Chex Systems, Inc. (ChexSystems) is a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). ChexSystems' clients regularly contribute information on closed checking and savings accounts.
How long does negative information stay on ChexSystems and/or EWS consumer reports? Generally, negative information remains on ChexSystems and/or Early Warning Services (EWS) consumer reports for five years. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, certain negative information may be reported for up to seven years.
Can I open a bank account with a 550 credit score?
Don't worry—while it can be more difficult, it is not impossible to get approved for a new bank account with bad credit. A bad credit score is considered a VantageScore® of 600 or lower and a FICO® score of 699 or lower.
You don't need a certain credit score to open a Chase checking or savings account, as there is no credit score requirement. Chase does not require a credit score for these accounts because they are deposit accounts, not loans or lines of credit.
Banks typically do not have direct access to information about a customer's accounts at other financial institutions. However, they may be able to obtain information about your other accounts through various means such as a credit report, if you give them permission to do so, or through a court order.
You can be denied an account if you're in debt to another bank because of an overdrawn account or overdraw your account too often. Mistakes happen, and sometimes those mistakes can be costly.
(It's similar to the way consumer credit bureaus use information reported by lenders to create your credit report.) Once you've been denied a bank account, the bank must tell you why. Being rejected for a checking account is likely due to one or more negative items in your ChexSystems report.
