Do you save money from buying an electric car?
Verdict: It depends. While insurance premiums and repair costs are typically higher with EVs than for gas-powered vehicles, the long-term energy savings costs may outweigh the difference. But only sometimes.
Going electric means you get to skip pricey trips to the pump, which is one of the biggest draws for making the switch. A 2018 study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute found that the average cost to fuel an electric car was $485 a year, compared to $1,117 for a gas-powered vehicle.
Electric car savings at a glance:
Your maintenance costs will also be lower, saving you up to $1,000 annually. You can save as much as $35,000 in just five years when you switch from a gas car to an EV!
All forms of electric vehicles (EVs) can help improve fuel economy, lower fuel costs, and reduce emissions.
A high-efficiency electric vehicle like a Tesla Model 3 costs 3-cents per mile for electricity or $450 per year if you drive 15,000 miles per year. A similar size gasoline car like a BMW 3 Series costs 11-cents per mile for gasoline or $1,650 per year to drive the same distance.
If using an EV, which gets an average of 3 to 4 miles per kWh (let's use 3 in this case), you will use about 375 kWh a month. Using the U.S. household average of about 16 cents per kWh, charging an electric car at home would cost nearly $60 per month.
When it comes strictly down to numbers of miles and years, an EV will likely outlast an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. With regular use, the average lifespan of a gas vehicle is 150,000 miles or eight years, and EVs can last up to 200,000 miles, or about 12 years.
Many experts peg the lifespan of an EV battery at between 100,000 and 200,000 miles. If your EV's battery fails before that, it will likely be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Dealers may have less economic incentive to sell electric vehicles. Buzz Smith, a former Chevrolet car salesman who now helps train dealers to sell EVs, says it can take much longer to sell an electric car than a gas-powered one.
Gas-powered cars are easy to use, easy to fuel, and have a driving range that makes them practical for long-haul road trips. These advantages, along with the generally lower up front costs to buy them, make gas-powered cars attractive for many drivers.
What is the downside to electric cars?
Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles - cons
These disadvantages include finding charging stations, charging times, higher initial costs, limited driving range, and battery packs can be expensive to replace.
Electric cars use completely different drivetrains, so you will never have to worry about routine oil changes that are necessary for traditional cars. Though your electric car does not need oil, it requires a routine check on these 3 fluids in EVs; coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washing fluid.
The short answer is no. Electric cars do not need motor oil as they don't have the conventional internal combustion engine with all the moving parts. Plug-in hybrids (and hybrids) still require traditional maintenance as they still employ an ICE in combination with an electric motor to increase efficiency.
Electric cars are inherently much simpler than internal combustion engine cars. (A Tesla Model S has only 18 moving parts in its drivetrain.) For this reason, breakdowns are less common, but it can happen.
Electric cars lose as much as half of their value after just three years on the road, new figures show, as the rate of depreciation far outstrips petrol equivalents.
Electric Car Maintenance Costs
Next to fuel costs, this is where most electric vehicles really shine. The 2021 Department of Energy study mentioned above found that the maintenance costs of electric vehicles are about 40 percent lower than those of comparable gas-powered vehicles.
Charging your EV is typically cheaper than filling up your gas-powered vehicle; you'll pay around $0.05 per mile to charge your EV compared to about $0.13 to fuel your gas-powered car. As of February 19, 2024, the average gas prices are $3.28 per gallon for regular gasoline and $4.06 per gallon for premium.
The cost is dependent on the amount of power consumed, not the voltage at which it is consumed. So they will generally be almost exactly the same. However, most power delivery and charging systems are slightly more efficient at 240V than 110V, so the cost would likely be slightly cheaper.
Vehicle and battery size: Small and low-range electric vehicles are less expensive than similarly sized gas vehicles across all 14 cities in the study. Larger, long-range EVs are more expensive than their gas counterparts, while midsize EVs can reach cost parity in some cities.
Are hydrogen cars better than electric cars? Yes, hydrogen cars are way better than electric cars in terms of zero harmful emissions, quick refueling, and longer driving range.
Can an electric car sit for a long time?
The giant lithium-ion units in today's electric cars are really good at retaining charge, but they're not perfect: An EV sitting still will lose a little bit of juice at a slow, steady rate, perhaps a couple of percentage points over the course of a month.
- Lucid Air: 410 Miles.
- Mercedes-Benz EQS: 400 Miles.
- Tesla Model S: 320 Miles.
- BMW i7: 310 Miles.
- Hyundai Ioniq 6: 300 Miles.
- BMW iX: 290 Miles.
- GMC Hummer EV Pickup: 290 Miles.
- Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV: 290 Miles.
Expect EVs to get cheaper in 2024, experts say: 'More incentives, more discounting' With electric vehicle prices declining amid a glut of unsold inventory on dealer's lots, you should be able to find a bargain on a zero-emission car in 2024.
Whilst lithium ion batteries do lose charge when the car is parked for an extended period, the good news is that this is usually a very minimal amount of the overall charge. Most electric cars can expect to lose only lose a few percent of their charge a month if sitting idle.
In the U.S., the typical non-luxury EV needs to log between 28,069 and 68,160 miles before netting any emissions benefits. “However, many households sell their vehicle before they get there,” he said. Tax credits, the researchers concluded, should incentivize long-term use of individual EVs.
