What you need to know about renewing your Driver License, Commercial Driver License (CDL), or Non Driver ID Card.

Renew a Driver License

Approximately two months before a Driver License is due to expire, the DMV sends a renewal notice to the applicant’s address as listed in DMV records. You will not receive a renewal notice if your mail is forwarded, if you moved and did not notify the DMV of your new address or if your license is suspended.

Renewal Options

Online: Driver License renewals may be completed online if you are eligible (please refer to the Renewal Notice mailed to you).

Request an appointment: The following are requirements for Driver License renewal appointment:

  • Completed Application for Driver License (DSMV 450)
    • Current New Hampshire Driver License or Non Driver ID
    • If you will be upgrading to REAL ID, additional documents are required. Please review our list of required documents for a REAL ID.
    • Appropriate Fee
    • Vision Test
    • You may be required to bring additional documents to your specific appointment. Please review the list below:
      • Permanent Residents/Refugees/Asylees/VISA and Work Authorization Card Holders should review the required documents for Non US citizens.

The DMV will issue you a 60-day, temporary paper license, and the permanent license will be mailed to your New Hampshire mailing address within 60 days.

Proof of Identity

You must have your current driver license with you when you renew. If you cannot locate your current driver license, you must provide proof of identity. If your image is on file at the DMV, you may use the image on file as proof of identity. If your image is not on file at the DMV, you must bring positive proof of identification and NH residency to renew the type of license you hold (REAL ID compliant or non-compliant).

Expired Licenses

Your license expiration date is listed on the front of the license in red. If your license expires, you cannot legally drive until you renew it. The requirements for renewing an expired license will depend on how long it has been expired:

  1. Expired for less than one year, renew as usual at any DMV office (if you are a Non-US Citizen, please visit Renew a Driver License for Non-US Citizens.
  2. Expired for longer than one year but less than three years, bring proper identification and residency documentation for the license type that you hold (REAL ID compliant or non-compliant) to any DMV office.
  3. Expired for three years or more, bring proper identification and residency documentation for the license type that you hold (REAL ID compliant or non-compliant) to any DMV office and you must pass a vision test, knowledge test and road test to renew your license.

Renew a Commercial Driver License

Approximately two months before a Commercial Driver License is due to expire, the DMV sends a renewal notice to the applicant’s address as listed in DMV records. You will not receive a renewal notice if your mail is forwarded, if you moved and did not notify the DMV of your new address or if your license is suspended.

Renewal Options

Request an appointment: An appointment is required to renew a Commercial Driver License. The following are requirements for Commercial Driver License renewal appointment:

  • Completed Commercial Driver License Application (DSMV 312)
  • Current New Hampshire Commercial Driver License
  • If you will be upgrading to REAL ID additional documents are required. Please review our list of required documents for a REAL ID.
  • Appropriate Fee
  • Vision Test
  • Valid Medical Certificate (unless exempt)
  • You may be required to bring additional documents to your specific appointment. Please review the list below:
    • CDL with Hazmat Endorsem*nt must have Fingerprints taken through TSA and your results must be back before you will be allowed to test.
    • Hazmat Knowledge test will be given (please review the CDL Manual
