Recap | 3 Penn State rookies make NBA debuts in 2023-24 season (2024)

It’s on to bigger and better things for these former Penn State players.

While Penn State doesn’t compare to the likes of Kentucky and Duke when it comes to churning out NBA talent, six talented Nittany Lions still saw playing time in the NBA and G League this season.

Here’s a look at how those players fared this season.

Lamar Stevens: Memphis Grizzlies

Undrafted in 2020, Lamar Stevens’ NBA career began rather shakily. Projected in mock drafts to be selected in the 50-60 range, the former Penn State forward never heard his name called, meaning he’d have to sign as an undrafted free agent and grind to make a team.

Stevens made the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 15-man roster, signing a four year, $5.8 million contract after making an impact with his physical defense and impressive motor.

Stevens was traded to the San Antonio Spurs last July in a sign-and-trade package surrounding Max Strus, but he was quickly waived and signed a one-year, partially guaranteed $2 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

After averaging 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds across 19 games for Boston, Stevens was rerouted once more, this time to Memphis in a package for Xavier Tillman Sr. Stevens posted career numbers with the Grizzlies, averaging 11.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 23 minutes per game.

Jalen Pickett: Denver Nuggets

The architect of Penn State’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011, Jalen Pickett burst onto the scene with his unorthodox back-to-the-basket play. Pickett was drafted 32nd overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 NBA Draft, becoming the first Penn State men’s basketball player to be drafted since Tony Carr in 2018.

The 6-foot-2 guard signed a four year, $8.2 million contract with the Nuggets that included $5.8 million guaranteed. Pickett appeared in 27 NBA games during his rookie season, averaging 1.6 points in limited minutes, but spent most of his time in the G League where he utilized his effective post game.

Denver made the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, falling in Game 7 of the second round to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Pickett played in three of those playoff games, repping Penn State on the NBA’s biggest stage.

Seth Lundy: Atlanta Hawks

Following a breakout senior season in Happy Valley that saw Seth Lundy post 14.2 points per game on 40% shooting from three, the New Jersey native found his way to the league, as he was selected by Atlanta with the 46th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The sharpshooter appeared in just nine games at the NBA level this season, shifting back and forth between Atlanta and College Park. The Penn State alum’s best performance came in the preseason against the Cavaliers, aiding Atlanta to a fourth-quarter comeback win with eight points down the stretch.

Andrew Funk: Chicago Bulls

Pure shooters — ones that simply have a God-given talent for putting the ball in the hoop from long distances — are hard to come by. Andrew Funk is just that, an uber-talented long-range sniper that starred for the Nittany Lions during their 2023 NCAA Tournament run.

Following a breakout senior season in which he averaged 12.5 points on an impressive 41.2% from three, Funk went undrafted and signed with the Denver Nuggets. The 6-foot-5 guard joined Pickett in the Mile High city, where he played Summer League ball before being waived prior to the 2023-24 NBA season.

Funk’s free agency didn’t last long, as the former Nittany Lion moved to Chicago on a two-way deal with the Bulls on Feb. 25. Most of Funk’s playing time came in the G League with the Windy City Bulls.

The Pennsylvania native appeared in five games with Chicago but is still searching for those evasive first NBA points.

After a successful two-year stint in State College, Izaiah Brockington finished his collegiate career at Iowa State before going undrafted in 2022. Following a year-long hiatus, Brockington signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans’ G League affiliate.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 12.6 points and 5.5 rebounds with the Birmingham Squadron. Brockington appeared in just one game for the Pelicans this season, scoring his first NBA bucket on an impressive drive to the rim.
