A multiplication factor used to convert a reported price-per-unit of a commodity to the contract price. The definition of point value can vary from trader-to-trader. The purpose of the point value is to determine the price of a complete contract or to determine profit or loss.

The term point value is used in the secondary market, more specifically in futures and options trading. The meaning of this term and its significance is given hereunder. In futures trading, the point value is the value of each point of price movement in a contract. It is used to calculate the profit or loss of a trade.

The place value after the decimal point represents the fractional part of the number. For example, the number 0.56 is made up of 5 tenths and 6 hundredths. This can also be written as 0.56 = 0.5 + 0.06. In other words, it means, 0.56 = 5/10 + 6/100.

To work out how much a point is worth, you would divide the money off amount by the number of points required – in this case, divide $5 by 500 points. This means each point is worth 1 cent. 500 points/$100 = 5% <- You give customers 5% back.
