Fair and affordable auto insurance in Oregon

Root makes it easy for the best drivers in Oregon to get cheap rates on their car insurance. From Eugene to Portland and Medford to Bend, Root offers affordable, high quality insurance to safe drivers in every corner of the Beaver State.

How it works

Traditional car insurance companies base their rates on demographic data. Demographics include age, marital status, credit score, and ZIP code. At Root, we don't think that's fair. That's why we base your insurance rate primarily on how you drive.

State requirements for car insurance in Oregon

Minimum auto insurance requirements in Oregon

Drivers in Oregon are required to carry Liability, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. You must be able to show proof of insurance if you’re stopped by a police officer, in a car accident, and when you register your vehicle or renew your registration. An electronic version of your ID card, like the one found in the Root app, is an acceptable form of proof. If you’re found driving without these required coverages you can face fines, suspension of your driver’s license, and towing of your vehicle.

Liability coverage

Liability coverage helps to pay for property damage or bodily injuries that occur from a car accident you cause. It doesn’t cover you or your family members—that’s why Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is required. Liability also doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle, but Collision and Comprehensive coverages do.

Minimum Liability insurance in OR:

  • $25,000 Bodily Injury (per person)

  • $50,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)

  • $20,000 for Property Damage

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP is required for drivers in Oregon. This coverage will help you pay for your medical bills for up to two years after a car accident, regardless of who is at fault.

Minimum PIP coverage in OR:

  • $15,000

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage (UM/UIM)

This insurance is for any injuries you suffer or damages you incur if you’re in an accident caused by a driver who doesn’t have car insurance or whose car insurance is insufficient.

Minimum UM/UIM coverage in OR:

  • $25,000 Bodily Injury (per person)

  • $50,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)

Penalties for driving uninsured

If you’re caught driving uninsured, you’ll face the following:

  • Fines

  • Suspension of your license and vehicle registration

  • Your vehicle can be towed and you’ll be responsible for any related fees

If you’re involved in an accident while uninsured, you’ll face suspension of your license for one year. Once you’ve reinstated your license, you’ll be required to file an SR-22 for three years. If you’re insured with Root, you can avoid that trouble. As long as you’ve got your phone, you have legal proof of your insurance through the Root app. We’ll also send you a paper copy of your policy.

What is an SR-22?

If a judge finds you guilty of driving without insurance, you may be required to file an SR-22 with the DMV for three years. An SR-22 acts as a guarantee that you hold at least the minimum required car insurance. You can request your SR-22 form directly in the Root app and we’ll get it where it needs to go. If you don’t file your SR-22 when ordered, your license could be suspended.

DMV Insurance Verification

The Oregon DMV verifies the insurance status of drivers in the state every month by requesting a random selection of drivers to provide:

The DMV verifies this information with the insurance company identified by the driver. If the DMV selects you to provide this information and you don't respond, your license will be suspended. If you’re caught responding with false information, you'll be required to file an SR-22 for three years.
