Thrilled to be returning to #ATS2024 tomorrow in San Diego.I am especially excited about the progress we’ve made in the past year at Strados Labs in helping the life sciences community collect data on respiratory symptoms that’s more objective than patient self-reports – I’m looking forward to hearing what others in the field are doing to innovate in respiratory health and to sharing updates on our work.If you’ll be at the event and would like to meet, please feel free to message me. You can also find me at #RIS2024 or in the exhibit hall at our booth (1131). #respiratory #COPD #Asthma #DigitalHealth #ClinicalTrials

As we're nearing #CASACon2023, I want to start connecting with CASA members and attendees online. Over the next two weeks, I'll be sharing some of my thoughts and lessons that I've developed over almost two decades of working in the healthcare industry.Today I want to remind everyone about the importance of cultural competence in healthcare.I've always believed in channeling effort over judgment when working with patients. In the realm of healthcare, the path to recovery isn't solely paved by medical expertise, but also by the depth of our connections with patients.Beyond diagnoses and treatments, there lies a crucial human connection. Every word, every concern shared by a patient is a piece of their unique narrative. By truly listening, we not only diagnose symptoms, but also uncover emotions, fears, and needs that guide us to tailored solutions. For instance, consider the patient's preferred language. Language can be a bridge or a barrier. Learning to communicate directly in a patient's language instead of utilizing interpreters eliminates hurdles and misinterpretations. It shows respect for diversity and creates an environment where patients feel truly understood.Going that extra mile to be culturally competent doesn't just end at understanding differences – it's a journey that culminates in an enhanced patient experience and superior treatment outcomes. Healing, then, becomes not just a physical process, but a deeply personal one. Let's continue to shape a healthcare landscape where compassion and cultural competence are as vital as medical prowess. Together, we can uplift patient experiences and redefine what it means to provide exceptional care. #PatientCare #CulturalCompetence #HealthcareExcellence #ASC #CASACon2023

Be “good trouble.” Grateful to have mentors like Khan Siddiqui, MD a successful serial entrepreneur and investor and fellow alum of Aga Khan University. He grew up with similar role models of both humble #servantleadership and confident stigma-battling leadership with a physician mother in #womenshealth who was similar to my female physician leaders in #Pakistan. Those role models and deep commitment to serving humanity shows in that kind of #medtech Khan builds, that can be used in the most sophisticated setting while also reduces disparities for those at the margins. https://lnkd.in/e7iuhWeXHaving had similar role models but having chosen the least lucrative part of medicine, I have struggled at midcareer to figure out where and how to be “good trouble.” I was naive to doing good alone was not enough if not also doing well financially for the institution and did not understand the pushback to “doing the right thing.” I now realize that the kind of “good trouble” of my relatives in Pakistan - women in a Muslim country promoting body autonomy via #birthcontrol and #familyplanning - is what the West likes to praise or fund when you are somewhere “over there.” That same courage (or courageous disregard, of even personal safety, to do what may not be welcome or popular) is reacted to differently when applied in corporate U.S. settings. What matters as an exec is the bottom line and existing KPIs. I’ve learned that the hard way that the “activist” is not welcome in the executive suite. Disrupting the status quo can threaten certain established forms of revenue or can encroach on turf. I went to get an #MBA to figure out how to be effective in the #business of medicine. Also, healthcare in this country is inseparable from politics. With the reversal of #Roe v Wade, that means women in parts of the U.S. have less access to safe, quality, science based care than some women in Pakistan. We see in the OpenAI blow up that there are right and wrong ways, per investors, to raise concerns on #ethics or safety, with a #nonprofit minded board fired. It is not about being right or wrong but about how you manage the processes and handle the delivery. My time at MIT Sloan School of Management has vastly increased my toolbox to #communicate and #negotiate more effectively as an executive. If you do not fit in well within corporate politics, #startuplife may be for you, to create #disruptiveinnovation or “good trouble” with a small, agile team that has honest, direct #communication and trust.

As a second-generation radiologist, I've witnessed profound changes in our field: from the advent of CT and MRI to the transition from film to digital (PACS), and now the shift from clinic-based to cloud-based radiology. I thought my career might end without another major upheaval, but the emergence of #HOPPR, breaking the AI glass ceiling from niche to a comprehensive platform, proved otherwise. My experience as an early adopter of PACS taught me about the dual nature of technological advances. While PACS enhanced care and efficiency, it also unwittingly distanced radiologists from patients and referring physicians, subtly altering the fabric of our profession. Similarly, AI presents a dichotomy. Platforms like HOPPR promise to streamline administrative tasks and reduce errors, revolutionizing our work. However, there's a risk of becoming overseers rather than active participants in each case, potentially diluting our professional involvement.Yet, there's no turning back. The potential of AI to improve healthcare delivery and foster health equity in underserved regions is immense. In areas starved of expert radiologists and technologists, AI can be a game-changer. But, as we navigate this new era, it's crucial to use these tools judiciously, ensuring they complement rather than replace the human elements of care.In embracing AI, we must strive to retain our role not just as diagnosticians but as empathetic consultants in the patient's journey, ensuring technology serves humanity, not the other way around.I welcome thoughts from others on how we manage this journey forward.Khan Siddiqui, MDShez Partovi MDRasu Shrestha MD MBAMatthew BarishEliot SiegelJared Saul, MDMorris PannerMurray A.
