Maine Moose Spotting - Learn to How Spot a Moose in Maine (2024)

Get yourself to Maine! (Northern Maine)

Getting to Maine is the #1 piece of advice we could give you. With a healthy population of around 75,000, Maine has the second largest population of moose, only behind Alaska (who has the time to get way up there anyway). The moose is not Maine’s official state animal for nothing!!

Look for signs!

This may seem like an obvious one, but those “Moose X-ing” signs are not just for decoration. They signal that you are now in moose country and to keep your eyes peeled (and proceed with caution of course). Moose, very often, are found on the sides near the roads, as the pavement creates a sort of natural salt lick for them.

Time your visit.

Although moose can be seen all year-round, May to mid-July is the best time to spot them, but if you’re really itching to see an antlered bull September and October is the best time. While we are on the subject of time; moose are most active during dawn and dusk, when the air is a bit cooler. Be sure to be very careful driving, especially when it is dark.

Know their diet

I bet it’s not keto. Moose are herbivores and munch on both terrestrial and aquatic plants, lillies being a favorite. Just like the best place to find your Dad is snacking in the kitchen, the best place to spot a moose is in wooded areas and especially around ponds and rivers.

Get to the river!

Moose find most of its dinner near the water because of its high salt content, but did you know MOOSE CAN SWIM? Yeah, they’re pretty good at it too! Moose can swim up to 6 mph and for two hours at a time. So, spend some time in and around the rivers in Maine, especially the Kennebec and Penobscot.
