What is my HH bond worth? An HH bond is worth its face value. If the bond says $500, it was bought for $500 and is now worth $500.

You must report interest for HH bonds on your federal income tax return for the year in which the interest was earned.

HH bonds earn interest until the first of these events: You cash in the bond or the bond reaches 20 years old. Some HH bonds will finish their 20-year life between now and 2024.

You cannot convert H or HH bonds. But you may want to convert already matured E, EE, or I bonds to accumulate money in your TreasuryDirect account and use that money to buy new savings bonds or other Treasury securities.

You just bought a security from the U.S. Treasury. Securities are generally issued to your account within two business days of the purchase date for savings bonds or within one week of the auction date for Bills, Notes, Bonds, FRNs, and TIPS.

While the Treasury will not penalize you for holding a U.S. Savings Bond past its date of maturity, the Internal Revenue Service will. Interest accumulated over the life of a U.S. Savings Bond must be reported on your 1040 form for the tax year in which you redeem the bond or it reaches final maturity.

For those, you must look at the issue date. EE and I bonds earn interest for 30 years from the issue date. HH bonds earn interest for 20 years from the issue date.

HH bonds pay interest income to owners semiannually on their face value. This interest is taxable in the year received. They cannot be purchased with cash, but are acquired only in exchange for Series E and EE bonds or by reinvesting the proceeds of matured HH/H bonds.

It could take as long as two months to get your money. But you will get the full interest that accrued over the years. (And remember, you will pay tax on that interest as ordinary income in the year you cash them in!)
