How many EV charging stations does the US need? ›

FOTW #1334, March 18, 2024: By 2030, the US Will Need 28 million EV Charging Ports to Support 33 million EVs. National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that by 2030 there will be 33 million EVs on the road and 28 million EV charging ports will be needed to support them.

US drivers welcomed almost 1,100 new public, fast-charging stations in the second half of last year, a 16% increase, according to a Bloomberg Green analysis of federal data. By the end of 2023, there were almost 8,000 places to quickly top up an EV (28% of them exclusive to Tesla).

It comes as no surprise that California has the most charging facilities for electric cars when taking into account the fact that more than 345,800 electric vehicles were sold in the state.

The Biden Administration's $7.5 billion effort to jump-start the electric-vehicle charging landscape is moving very, very slowly. Now more than two years after the program was signed into law in late 2021, only eight chargers have been put in place.

ChargePoint is the largest EV charging network in the States by a notable margin. In fact, the company has over 27,000 stations with nearly 50,000 individual charging ports. Tesla, the next closest rival, has roughly 6,000 station locations and about 28,000 charging ports.

S&P Global Mobility estimates there are about 126,500 Level 2 and 20,431 Level 3 charging stations in the United States today, plus another 16,822 Tesla Superchargers and Tesla destination chargers.

Tesla remains the undisputed champion of EV sales in the U.S., capturing 55% of the EV market in 2023. That's down from 65% in 2022, but lower prices are clearly fortifying the company's position.

Almost 600 public fast-charging stations were switched on for US drivers in the first three months of the year, a 7.6% increase over the end of 2023, according to a Bloomberg Green analysis of federal data. There are now almost 8,200 quick-turn EV stations across the country, or one for every 15 gas stations.
